Blending music, art, and new technologies, Electric Castle (EC) has strengthened its reputation over the years for its immersive experiences and eclectic atmosphere. Taking place on the beautiful grounds of Bánffy Castle in Transylvania, the festival began expanding its program as early as the 2017 edition with the introduction of the New Media Castle section. In this setting, artists from around the world, alongside a dedicated team and students from the Digital Interactive Arts program at Babeș-Bolyai University in Cluj, transformed the historic ruins of the castle into a captivating space for visual and technological exploration.
My collaboration with EC began in 2017 when I was contracted to handle the technical production of what was then a series of shows and interactive installations, which included:
Lords of Lightning
Umbrella Project
Entativity
Is That You?
In 2019, Alex Czetwertynski was invited to curate, produce, and oversee the integration of the new New Media Castle section into the festival’s overall identity. I was brought on board as Technical Director, where, throughout the 2019 and 2020 editions of EC New Media Castle, I contributed to the production and presentation of the artistic installations featured in the program.
You can find more information about the installations in the program here.
Since the 2020 edition was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic, we returned in 2021 with a “Special” edition, taking place over two weekends, from August 6 to 15, across multiple venues in Cluj-Napoca and Bonțida (instead of being held entirely, as usual, on the grounds of Bánffy Castle in Bonțida).
The New Media program was spread across various locations in the city, both indoors and outdoors.
